Rooftop Solar Power plants must for new buildings

The Haryana government last year made it mandatory to install solar power plants on the rooftops of buildings built on 500 sq. yard of area. The plan was unfortunately a non starter. But this year the Haryana government announced its ambitious target of generating 1600 MW of solar power through the installation of solar power plants on the roof tops by 2021-22. This focus on the solar power generation on roof tops is an integral part of the Haryana Solar Power Policy which was released by the government headed by Monohar Lal Khattar in the month of March.

The state has also made solar plants mandatory in all the private and government educational institutes, universities and offices as well with a load of 30 KW. This is also mandatory on top of all the private hospitals and commercial and industrial establishments consuming a load of 50 KW or more. A senior official of HAREDA, the Haryana government’s department of Renewable Energy opined that the state is attempting to focus on the solar power plants on the rooftop. The new Renewable Energy Policy also proposed that these roof top solar plants will have to be built only on the new buildings.

The Solar Power Experts opined that this new policy is an improved one over the earlier one and the emphasis is on the rooftop solar plants. It is a good option in the urban areas also but if the focus has to be on the rural areas it will be a much bigger project. The experts have voiced their opinions and said that while this policy is an improved version of the earlier one, implementation of it is a key concern.
